In the past an engine block & cylinder heads were cleaned of all internal rust from the water jackets By a Super Hot Tank of Sodium Hydroxide Caustic Solution. Boiled at 212 F degrees Hot for 2 - 7 days.
It has been outlawed in all 50 states now that I know of.
Last time I seen an operating Hot tank in a Machine shop was back in 1999 here in Illinois.
The EPA put an Ax down Hot Tanking to clean parts in Auto & Diesel Machine shops.

They now use Jet spray washing machines with a Soap solution.
Like washing your parts with Tide detergent.
Jet spray works ok Cleaning.
It does Nothing to remove internal coolant passage rust deposits.
One friend that runs a machine shop uses Hydrochloric Acid to clean out rusty Iron blocks & heads.
The Fumes are Deadly & Horrendous given off by Hyrochloric acid and iron & steel .

EVAPO Rust remover is safe & very effective I have found to use at home.

Rigged up my cooling system flush EVAPO Rust remover on the engine stand.
The 20 vdc cordless drill has plenty of power to turn the stock 389 water pump full speed at 1200 rpms.
I can hear the EVAPO & water solution pumping throughout the cylinder heads & engine block.
There are Gusher Cooing tubes in the cylinder heads ( Stainless Steel in 1959 / most earlier were Brass) I want spotless clean.
They direct water jet spray right onto the exhaust seats.
Unique to the 1955-59 Pontiac V8 with Reverse Flow Cooling system.

Gusher Tube cooled exhaust seats goes way back in Pontiac Engine history I discovered.
Looked in a Vintage 1953 Motor repair manual I have.
Used on the Pontiac straight 6 & straight 8 cylinder engines.
1939 - 1954.
Where part of the idea of Reverse flow gusher cooled cooling systems came from.

Some Real Nasty crap came out of the Water jackets in the block, cylinder heads, intake manifold, & front timing cover with water pump assembly.
An Olive Drab Green the Evapo Rust Remover turned to.

I followed up with multiple flushes with Tide Cold water HE detergent & water.
Then flushed several times with clean water.
I spun the water pump over 5 minutes each flush rinse with my Cordless drill.
The '59 389 Block & cylinder heads hold just under 3 gallons of water.

Results are pretty good looking in through the thermostat housing.
Probably should have let the Evapo Rust remover work another day.
I may purchase another 2 gallons of Evapo Rust remover this weekend and give the 389 water jackets another soaking to be sure all old scum & rust is removed 100 %.

Sure beats using Muratic Acid/ Hydrochloric acid to clean with.
I still have my eyes, skin, hands, & Lungs to breath with.
No worries of endangering the kids & wife too.

EVAPO RUST REMOVER IS AWESOME STUFF

Its My Great Pontiac V8 Chemistry Experiment John :-)

I did buy 3 more gallons of Evapo Rust remover last Saturday.
Dumped it all into the 389 water jackets of the longblock.
I checked a bit ago and the Evapo Rust remover darkened again. Not near as bad as last weak.
It has really warm here the last few days. Daytime temps in the Lower 90's and that's when Evapo Rust remover works best .

I will have some spending cash this weekend again.
Order My Fel Pro Full gasket set & a Set of Brass Freeze Plugs Sealed Power brand.
Place an order with Summit Racing.

Get the heads off & timing cover next is my plan soon.

No one is selling Brass Freeze Plugs for Pontiac V8 Cylinder Heads.
I will have to track them down local.

Hope you are able to source them. Are you going to rering and deglaze this engine or just inspect the bearings and run it? Also when you have the heads off any plans on checking the bore?
